So many times as CrossFitters we hear “I could never do that” when we invite someone to join us at the gym, here are five reasons CrossFit works in real life (IRL). CrossFit isn’t for the select few, it is literally for everyone, it is designed that way.
Myth 1: You have to be fit to start CrossFit
IRL: CrossFit meets you where you are. Everything we do at 1201 CrossFit is scalable to fit your current fitness level. If you can’t squat, you’ll sit/stand from a box, if you aren’t quite ready for push-ups, you can do them on a wall, if barbells are too heavy we’ll start you with a PVC (but we have four barbells weights ranging from 15lbs to 45lbs, to help you progress). If there are twelve people in class, there might be twelve versions of the same workout happening – everyone has something that is customized for them.
Myth 2: CrossFit is dangerous
IRL: All physical activity has risk, but at 1201 CrossFit our Coaches emphasize proper form, consistently before we reach any type of intensity. While intensity creates results, consistency is required first, since you cannot consistently train if you are injured staying injury free is paramount. Each class is coach-led for the full hour to ensure your safety. In fact, functional training like CrossFit, reduces injuries in your day-to-day life.
Myth 3: CrossFit is for young people
IRL: At 1201 CrossFit, we have members that age from ages 14 to over 80. To know how we do that, see Myth 1. The goals of everyone in the gym are different but the beauty of reaching them together and learning from each other is inspiring.
Myth 4: We only lift heavy weights
IRL: We do lift heavy weights sometimes, but we lift light ones too. We also row, run, jump rope, use kettlebells, and do bodyweight movements. Our goal is well-rounded fitness and to move our bodies better. The 10 General Physical Skills in one way we define fitness and it requires a multitude of modalities.
Myth 5: We’re competitors
IRL: Most members at 1201 CrossFit just want to be better people who want to be healthier, happier, stronger and more confident. If there’s any competition here, it’s with ourselves or friendly banter amongst friends. You will find a supportive, welcoming atmosphere – we’re not chasing scores.
